The Salomon Ultra Pirineu steps up its efforts to reduce the impact on the natural environmental
Separate collection of provisions, progressive reduction in the use of single-use plastics and the incorporation of recyclable and biodegradable material. These are some of the actions that the organization of the Salomon Ultra Pirineu has been carrying out for years in order to reduce the race’s impact on the natural environment. Now, together with the sports nutrition brand Etixx and Salomon, the aim is to go one step further and also involve the runners, encouraging them to maintain the environment. This is the objective of the Etixx Salomon Ultra Pirineu Eco Campaign, a campaign aimed at the participants in the trial in order to reduce the impact of waste on the natural environment.
Trail running, like any other human activity, generates an impact on the natural environment, especially arising from the packaging of gelsgels, food bars and other products that the participants consume during the race. Each year, the organization is in charge of removing the waste that may have remained in the environment. This year, however, a new objective is introduced: raise the awareness of participants to quickly and effectively collect the wastethat they find on the route or that they may have generated themselves. This prevents the wind or other external factors from being able to spread it, affecting the flora and fauna and thus guaranteeing better care of the environment.
“The campaign’s goal is to raise the awareness of all the participants about the importance of collecting the waste that may be found on the route and that which they may generate themselves”, says David Prieto, Director of the Salomon Ultra Pirineu.
How to participate in the Etixx Salomon Ultra Pirineu Eco Campaign
All those people registered for any of the races of the Salomon Ultra Pirineu can participate in the Etixx Salomon Ultra Pirineu Eco Campaign. Both the participants taking part in the Mitja Pirineu or the Trail Pirineu which start and finish in Bellver de Cerdanya and those running in the Ultra Pirineu or the Sky Pirineu from Bagà, are invited to join the action.
The objective is that, once the race has begun, the runners endeavour to keep all the waste that they generate and accumulate during the trial, in addition to trying to collect that which they may find on the route. The organization moreover has a team in charge of guaranteeing the cleanliness of the Park after the race, but the immediate involvement of the runners is also necessary in order to prevent the possible remains that are generated from affecting animal and plant species or blowing away in the wind.
Runners are thus encouraged to hold on to the waste until they reach the finish line where, both in Bagà and in Bellver de Cerdanya, there will be two big campaign containers ready to collect everything accumulated during the race.
This action will have a reward since, as the participants arrive, a note will be taken of all those people who take part in the action. They will all enter a draw with three prizes: Salomon Speedcross 5 trail shoes, a pack of Etixx products and a start number for the next edition of the Salomon Ultra Pirineu; there will therefore be three winners.
The organization of the Salomon Ultra Pirineu thus demonstrates its commitment to maintaining a sustainable natural environment, respecting the beauty and wealth of the territory.
